On July 9, 2026, IUCN updated the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, which has evolved since 1964 to become the world’s most comprehensive source of information on the global conservation status of animal, fungal and plant species.
More than 49,500 species, 28% of the total of more than 175,000 species assessed to date, are under threat of extinction.
